This week is Military Police Week at Fort Leonard Wood. This community event will mark the 71st Anniversary of the Military Police Corps Regiment. This year’s theme is “Balancing the Force for Decisive Action.”

The week kicks off with our Regimental Conference, bringing in a selected group of Military Police senior leaders to focus on the strategic way ahead for Regiment as we support the future Army of 2020. The Senior Leader Conference is by “invitation only,” to Active Duty/Reserve/National Guard Military Police Command, Military Police Brigade and CID Group Commanders/Command Sergeants Major and other select leaders in COCOM, MACOM, and Corps.

Also, during the week, we will have the opportunity to support the Soldiers competing in the Annual Military Police Warfighter competition representing units from around our Regiment as they are tested both physically and mentally throughout the competition.

In addition, to this week’s event, the oldest living Military Police Army veteran in the country, Gene Stephens has been invited to a National Gathering, where he will be the guest of honor.

Gene was drafted back in 1941, just as the Army started its MP program. During World War II, Gene served as an MP in England and North Africa, escorting the war’s biggest names – Generals, even Eisenhower.

Planning a trip with your best friend? Are you looking for a pet friendly hotel in the Ft Leonard Wood or St. Robert area? Pet-friendly hotels make the city a destination us pets, too. When you travel with your pets, you want to make sure they will stay in comfort and style.

Here are pointers you need to know, when you travel with your pet.

Know before you go

The first step in planning a trip with your animal is considering what’s in it for him or her. Oftentimes, it’s more practical to hire a sitter or board your pet, so you want to be certain that he or she is going to get just as much enjoyment out of the journey as you will.

As hotels and airlines begin to cater more to our four-legged friends, many people are starting to enjoy the benefits of traveling with a pet. Some hotels go as far as pampering our animals with personalized beds, gourmet treats, and turndown service. And several airlines even offer frequent flyer miles for the dog or cat who’s always on the go. However, before you start planning a vacation, it’s important to prepare yourself and your pet for the road ahead.

Know before you go

Once you’ve decided to bring your pet along, you need to think about safety. While packing extra food, water (ice cubes work wonders), and favorite toys, it’s wise to take a minute to locate the closest veterinarian to where you’ll be staying. Many times, your local vet can provide resources for you if they are familiar with the area. If not, services like Healthy pet and American Animal Hospital Association, are services that can provide vets in the area that you are visiting.

Update Your Identification Tags

The next step in preparing to visit your pet friendly hotel is updating your identification tags. You must keep your pets ID tags up to date at all time, but even more so when you are travelling. Sometimes, we like to do a little exploring on our own, and we want to make sure that if we can’t find our way back, that someone can contact our owner. It is also a great idea to have a few color photos of your four-legged best friend on hand just in case you get separated.

There is nothing like being on a trip with your furry friend and being kept awake all night with a restless pet not wanting to sleep in their bed. It is important to let your pet become familiar with its kennel for sleeping, its airline carrier, and car carrier. Before your trip, allow your pet to sleep in its kennel and ride in its carrier. Allowing your pet to become familiar with its surroundings will make for a more pleasant trip for everyone.

Remember that if you are flying, make sure that your pet carrier is airline friendly and fits within your airlines guidelines. Review any charges associated with pets, medical records required, and special arrival times required.

Don’t Change The Normal Daily Routine

Although you are travelling and staying in a pet friendly hotel, it is important to keep any regular routines for your pet. Keeping your pets regular routine while travelling will reduce the stress your pet experiences. Robert D. “Jake” Tedaldi, D.V.M., winner of Boston Magazine’s 2006 “Best of Boston” award for veterinarian, suggests that you, “Try to make the arrangements and transitions as stress-free as possible by attempting to reproduce the living experience your animal is already accustomed to.” For instance, keeping a regular feeding and walking schedule wherever you go will help your pet feel more secure. It’s also comforting for the animal to have familiar items such as a favorite toy or blanket.

Doctor’s Visit

A doctor’s visit is imperative before any trip to a pet friendly hotel. Make sure your furry travel companion is up-to-date on vaccinations, and have any necessary for the area where you are visiting. Your doctor can assist you with finding out any required vaccinations required for your trael.

For longer trips, your vet may recommend sedation. This may be especially true for anxious or aggressive pets. If you decide to sedate your pet, make sure work out a test drive for the sedative with your vet so you know how your pet reacts so you don’t have any unnecessary surprises when you arrive at your pet friendly hotel.

For domestic flights, some airlines require a health certificate acquired within the previous 10 days. For international flights, it’s wise to make an appointment with a doctor six months in advance, as different countries have different restrictions.

Border Crossing

When traveling abroad, be sure to know the requirement of the visiting countries customs and border protection for pets visiting the country. Don’t forget to make sure you check with U.S. Customs for any required documentation for re-entry into the U.S.A.

taking a trip to Canada or Mexico, it’s always important to familiarize yourself with the most current requirements for pet transport. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the procedures, contact the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency before hitting the road.
